Welcome to ENGL 1010

This course will serve as an introduction to college-level writing and composition. The goal of this course is to introduce you to writing techniques and strategies that will serve you in your college courses and beyond. As your writing instructor, my pedagogical goal is to help you perform the challenging task of communicating complicated ideas and making them legible and valuable to readers. No matter how good or bad you feel about your writing, you will leave this course with transferable writing skills. We will pay special attention to the skills necessary for writing clear and cohesive essays across a range of genres: a personal narrative essay, an argumentative essay, and a comparative essay.

For each essay, we will discuss how the conventions of a genre and readerly expectations both impacts how we choose to communicate our ideas on the page. All major writing assignments will include opportunities to practice brainstorming, drafting, and revising. In addition to working on your own writing skills, we will focus on building your skills as readers through engagement with analyzing both professional and published writing as well as learning how to give and receive writing-based feedback with your peers.
